Founding and early years
Ocean Township Little League (OTLL) was founded around 1959, when local organizers established a Little League program in Ocean Township, New Jersey, under the umbrella of Little League International in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Colt family donated the property on Logan Road that became the OTLL complex, with the understanding that it would be used solely for Little League baseball and that OTLL would remain affiliated with Little League International.
The Colt family and Colt Field
James J. Colt, born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania around 1898, played a central role in OTLL’s origin. In the 1950s he pursued a large racetrack project on a 1,000‑acre parcel in Secaucus (now the Meadowlands Sports Complex) but never secured the racing license, a setback his family later called one of his biggest disappointments. By contrast, one of his greatest accomplishments was founding OTLL and arranging for the Colt family to donate the entire Colt Field complex on Logan Road, which became – and remains – the league’s home.
Facilities and tradition
The Colt Field complex on Logan Road in Ocean, NJ (2811 Logan Road) has served as OTLL’s primary facility since its construction around 1959. Historical photos in the OTLL clubhouse show the groundbreaking and various phases of construction of the fields and facilities, all dated circa 1959, documenting the league’s early physical development. Over time, OTLL has invested in field improvements, including major renovations of its “Major (North) field” at the Logan Road complex, reflecting a continued commitment to maintaining high‑quality playing conditions for the community’s players.
Mission and community role
OTLL operates as a non‑profit, volunteer‑run organization with a mission to provide a safe environment that emphasizes security and positive sportsmanship for children in the community. The league’s long‑standing affiliation with Little League International and its dedicated facility at Colt Field have made it a central part of youth baseball in Ocean Township for multiple generations.
